Heather is the Professor of Biochemical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Aberdeen.  Her research interests are in the mechanisms of cell death associated with anticancer drugs and potential chemopreventative agents and in particular drugs targeting the polyamine pathway. Selective drug delivery and the use of biomarkers for diagnosis and monitoring efficacy of anticancer drug therapy are also part of her research programme.  

Heather is President of the British Toxicology Society and was President of EUROTOX 2014 in Edinburgh. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and currently is CPD Advisor for Toxicology at the College. She is also a Fellow of the following learned Societies: British Toxicology Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, Society of Biology and British Pharmacological Society.  Heather has been a member of the UK Register of Toxicologists and a European Registered Toxicologist since 2006.   She is a Deputy Chair and a member of the Editorial Board of the Biochemical Journal and reviews for many journals and grant awarding agencies.  She is a member of the EUROTOX Executive Committee.

Heather has been Chair of a Gordon Research Conference and a member of the Executive and Council of the Biochemical Society.  She was a non-executive director of a publishing company for 7 years.
